Texas couple on a budget remodel old shed into tiny house

A Fayetteville, Texas, couple remodeled the tiny shed on inherited land and transformed it into a place for their family to call home, Insider reports.

Katy and Michael Krebs spoke with Insider over undertaking the project, asserting a comfortable and inexpensive lifestyle is possible in such a small space.

“I always wanted a kitchen like that and you don’t have to spend a whole bunch of money just to achieve it,” Katy Krebs said. “I wanted a farmhouse sink, I wanted shiplap walls, and I could have them in my tiny house. You can live a nice lifestyle and still live tiny.”

The Krebs documented many lessons learned across their social media: creating new walls, getting other family members involved in the renovation, and learning to draw floor plans and laying details out before getting their hands dirty.

“We wanted our AC in the bedroom, but it ended up being in the living room,” Katy Krebs told Insider. That set our plans back because now we have this big galvanized piping in the front where the porch is. At first I didn’t really like it, but now I don’t notice it as much, but it’s definitely a reminder to have everything drawn out before you begin.”

Rearranging the floor plan and adding a porch expanded the total square footage available to the family. After nine months of renovation from September 2020 to May 2021, the couple ended up with a new place to call home for about $16,000 – under their original budget of $20,000.

The project drew positive and negative attention on Katy Krebs’ TikTok (@katyelizkrebs), where she documented the remodeling and continues to keep her followers updated on the tiny house life.

Some commenters on TikTok called attention to the lack of fixed sleep space for the couple’s daughters, 7-year-old Carolina and 3-year-old Harper, and the potential lack of privacy within the house in the future. Krebs assured commenters and Insider it would not be an issue, as the couple is saving money to renovate and move into the main house on the property once belonging to Michael’s grandparents, where the girls would eventually have rooms of their own.
